PROGRAMS

 PROGRAM: POSHAN TO PAATHSHALA

Project Name : Basai Basti

Project Description

The Feeding India project Basai Basti is a program where food is provided to underprivileged children as an incentive for them to go to school. Basai Basti is a small rural island located in Gurgaon. Despite being close to the ongoing development of the rest of the city, this area remains in a state of isolation and neglect. As such, the children here face a lack of opportunity and have a distinct disadvantage when it comes to education and nourishment. Feeding India has adopted this school and provides a nutritious meal to the children who come here.

Key Details

Feeding India serves food through the Magic Van Program. Every day the food is collected from corporate cafeterias and school canteens and is served to the children here. Feeding India has also set up a deep freezer in this school which the school authorities use to store food when it is not being served immediately. Feeding India conducts nutrition check ups once in 6 months to assess the health of the children.

Timings

The food is served as an evening meal to the children at 4:00 PM

Beneficiaries

The beneficiaries of this project are the local children of the area. Most of the families of these children come from lower income backgrounds.

Age group – 3-14 years
Gender – 29 boys and 21 girls

Impact

‚ÄčThe Basai Basti project has been a huge success and has spread the campaign into other locations as well. The enrollment rate increased by 110% in this school after we began the project, from 45 to 100 kids (?). School dropout rate has also dropped by 40% and absenteeism has also reduced significantly. They have been impacted significantly. Now that the kids are being fed regularly, they have an improved average body mass index, from 17.4 to 18.1 (?)

Other Activities

  • Puppet show for the kids’ entertainment

  • Conducted awareness workshops about women’s safety and self defense

  • Employee engagement – Employees from Elanpro came to visit the shelter as part of their employee engagement program

  • Feeding India has also set up a fridge which the school uses to store food when it is not being served immediately.

Challenges

  • Poor infrastructure – The school lacks funds to get tables and chairs for the students

  • Low on funds for health checkups – conducting regular checkups is quite expensive

  • Limited Access to big containers – Feeding India needs large containers to transport food

Next Steps

  • School needs better infrastructure – table, chairs and proper plates for its students.

  • Allocating funds for medical camps and checkups

  • Procure big containers which will help us logistically.
